Donna Marie (Saunchegrow) Taylor

Sept. 6, 1945- Dec. 24, 2016

Donna Marie (Saunchegrow) Taylor, the tenth child of Freddie and Dimples (Doss) Saunchegrow was born on September 6, 1945 in South St. Louis and departed this life at her home on December 24, 2016 at the age of 71 years.

Donna being the youngest, was naturally spoiled by her older siblings, she was so little that they used one of her father’s handkerchief as a diaper. Donna also had polio as a child. It has been told that if Donna could not have her way, she would have tantrums and hold her breathe until she got her way, a few times she passed out.  It is hard to reconcile this to the quite woman that most knew her to be. Being just two years older than her first nephews (the twins), Donna grew up along with her nieces and nephews, more as an older sister than aunt thus forming special bonds with each of them.

Most of Donna’s life was spent living in South St. Louis, she attended Humbolt Elementary and in 1964 graduated from McKinley High School. She also attended Wurduck Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Donna was married to Larry Taylor from 1973 until his death in 2014 after 41 years of marriage. Being close to her sister Janet, Donna and Larry purchased their home across the street from the Hassler’s, where she could help with Janet’s three sons.

For many years, Donna worked as a data entry clerk at the Jefferson Gravois Bank, until it was purchased by the Bank of America and she was relocated to the downtown office from where she retired from.

Donna enjoyed reading and going out to eat with family and friends. She would attend the monthly Goldbug luncheons and every Friday evening she would have dinner with longtime friends Linda and Sandy.

Donna is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Larry, five sisters: Gloria (Peachy) Binder, Virginia Goede, Janet Hassler, Jean Ussery and Carol Saunchegrow, two brothers: Vernon and Donald Saunchegrow, one niece Beverly and nephew Clifford.

She is survived by two sisters: Helen (Ed) Hahler and Maureen Saunchegrow, a special nephew Mark Hassler, son of her heart. Ten nephews: Art, Vernon G., Gary, Jeffery, Joe, Mike, Donnie, Freddie, Herbert and Vernon S., nine nieces: Debbie, Linda, Cindy, Betsy, Susie, LuAnn, Nancy, Vickie and Denise, a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Each person has a special memory of Donna, she will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

Terri was a voracious reader, loved history and always sought the truth. She was an accomplished seamstress, talented fencer, wonderful cook, avid gardener, active with living history and loved reenacting especially at Marrow Bone Springs. She was multi-lingual and very charitable volunteering her time in Ecuador with Amigos De Los Americas as well as multiple historic sites around the country.

Terri and Jerry loved to travel and see the world, recently traveling on a transatlantic cruise to Spain, Italy and Athens before their first trip to Disney World this summer with their grandchildren, who cherished the time together-they loved her so much.

She was passionate and vocal about equal rights and wanted to leave the world a better place for her daughter and granddaughter. She was intelligent and strong and not afraid to speak her mind.

She will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of Terri's favorite charities would be appreciated.

Ruth M. (nee Mayer) Kamphoefner

 January 6, 1926 – October 26, 2016

Ruth M. Kamphoefner was born to the late Rev. Dr. Herman A. and Anna (nee Hagen) Mayer in International Falls, MN and raised in Bay City MI. She moved to St. Louis in 1946 when her father took a position with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, where he later served as secretary of LCMS World Missions.

After graduating from Washington University, Ruth began her teaching career at Emmaus Lutheran School in St. Louis and later at Salem Lutheran in Affton. In 1950, she married Edgar O. Kamphoefner, and they were blessed with five children, first adopting Kathleen, and later Ruth gave birth to Carol, James, Mark and Karen. After the death of her husband Edgar in 1964, besides raising her growing family, Ruth worked part-time as an illustrator and graphic artist for Concordia Publishing House and later resumed teaching art, geography and civics at Salem Lutheran.

In 1970, the widowed Ruth moved her family to Lafayette Square. Starting with a shell of a house facing the park, she helped restore 18 houses. Utilizing a strategy of purchasing the worst house on a street, she set in motion the restoration of entire blocks. Ruth authored and published “Lafayette Comes Back” in 2006, a chronicle of the events of that era. She became known as the “Mother of Lafayette Square”, and was featured in a KETC TV documentary on Lafayette Square and at the Missouri History Museum.

Her work in the city was more than just about architecture and buildings. Always noticing those in need around her, Ruth assisted many of the poor and elderly to gain access to healthcare, housing and food. Ruth also worked tirelessly for fair and honest elections in the City of St. Louis and championed for equal access to city services, not just for those who were politically connected.

In her later years, Ruth devoted her community efforts to restoring the grotto and gardens in Lafayette Park. In addition to a plaque in the park honoring her work, she was recognized by the Board of Alderman of the City of St. Louis in 2006. She shared her love of gardening with everyone she met, giving bits of her garden away and always having more to give.  She gardened every piece of bare ground she found around Lafayette Square, including empty lots and alleys, and helped establish several community gardens in Lafayette Square and Soulard.

Ruth was interested in conservation and recycling long before it became popular. This was reflected in her art which often utilized “found” objects or discarded plastic, carpet scraps, tile, slate, stone and burnt wood. She revived old furniture with painted designs and created mosaics from scrap tile and marble. Her artwork was featured at Marbles Studio and Gallery in 2006, and her murals decorated Forest Park Hotel, St. Louis Bread Co., and many private homes. An array of her scorched wood panels on the Passion of Christ has been displayed at Salem Lutheran Church.
