1923 – 2016
Velia D. Kanaday nee Hedrick, 92, of Bismarck passed away on Monday, 22 February 2016 and was born 17 June 1923 in St. Louis to the late Ike and Goldie A. Hedrick. Mother of the late daughter Patricia Ann (31 January 1947 - 23 March 1948). She was the last surviving of eight siblings: Lawrence H., Lloyd B., Paul J., Vivian Marie Hedrick-Manning, David Lee, Donald W., and Vernon. Wife of the late Seldon P. Kanaday. Survived by step-daughter, Lahoma J. Kanaday Creed; son-in-law, Magnus Creed; her beloved cat, Adinga; sister-in law Lora Kennedy; several nieces and nephews; friends; and the biological mother of Lahoma Kanaday Creed, Minister Brenda E. Straub (Weinhold) to whom she was a good friend.
Velia joined Bismarck United Methodist Church on 24 April 1936 and remained a member for all of her life. After attending beauty school, she worked as a beautician in St. Louis before getting an associate’s degree and working as an accountant for the U.S. Army. She retired from the Army in 1984. She resided in Longwood, Florida from 1984 to 1995 before returning to Bismarck to be near her siblings after the death of her husband in 1994. After her return to Missouri, Velia did accounting for her church and was an Election Poll worker for approximately 15 years. She enjoyed landscaping, gardening, and spending time with her cat and friends.
Memorial service will be held at Bismarck United Methodist Church in the near future.
